How come in movies, when using handheld cameras, you never hear the cameraman's footsteps?

I make movies and footsteps are the bane of my existence. Watching movies like Children of Men or I Am Legend makes me wonder how come you never hear them. Sure, you can use mono directional microphone, but how do you counter the echo?

because they're making it look like that- its really an expensive pro camera
